Workshop May 22
Spring Stitch Exploration
Suitable for: beginners and the more experienced
Join me in the garden studio for a lovely relaxing 3hrs of simple slow stitch where the emphasis is on exploring soft spring colours, relaxation and the playful sensory experience of sewing. As springtime draws to a close let's capture this moment in stitch.
The project
Create a beautiful hand stitched background that could be made into a small project such as a needle case or small hanging. Our morning session is about the process and taking your time more than completing a finished item in class.

Inspired by Boro
Inspired by 'Boro' a traditional Japanese piecing , patching and mending technique. The word litereally translates into 'tatterred'. We will take this time honoured technique and modify as we explore Spring colour.

At the end of the 3 1/2 hrs you will be invited to fill one dolly peg with threads of your choice and take just enough scraps to continue your explorations at home and complete your piece. In order to do this you will need your own needles and pins.

What you will do
You will begin with a piece of soft white linen and stabiliser. The sewing starts with simply assembling these two layers together. You will choose from a beautiful varied selection of Spring themed threads and fabrics. It will be a limited pallette.Taking inspiration from provided images of the Spring landscape and flowers, you will experiment with layering colour and texture as you build up the surface of your linen piece. Using straight stitch in varied ways you will learn to sew your patches down. I will show you how by selecting different weight threads and colours you can alter the visual and textural qualities of your piece. As you experiment you may begin to notice some stitches look like rain, seeds, or a line of patches make a path and so your piece begins to tell its own unique story through your hands. You may choose to add words to deepen the meaning.
